Wright Williams & Kelly
WWK to Commercialize
June 10, 1996 (Dublin, CA) - Wright Williams & Kelly announced today that it has signed a commercialization license with Sandia National Laboratories for its factory cost model software package. The factory cost model software, which will be sold under the name Factory Commander®, is a cost and resource evaluation model (CRM) that can be applied to the manufacture of semiconductors, flat panel displays, magnetic heads, and other discrete manufacturing and assembly industries. It allows for strategic and tactical evaluation of factory and product costs as well as forecasted revenue.
Factory Commander® is the only commercially available model of its type. It was originally developed as part of the National Center for Advanced Information Components Manufacturing (NCAICM) economic modeling project. NCAICM's objective is to create a domestic infrastructure in flat panel display manufacturing. This project will provide additional enhancements to the existing software, allow for development of new applications, and help insure the proper level of support for all users regardless of geographic location or ownership.
"The factory cost model represents the culmination of 2 years of hard work by a dedicated team of experts," states Dr. Tom Bomber, Sandia's manager of the NCAICM modeling project. David Lauben, the model architect stated, "Our goal was to provide a tool that would drive cost competitiveness in the domestic flat panel display industry. We exceeded our design goals by developing a product that can be useful in many discrete manufacturing and assembly environments. Having provided our standard training course to over 35 users and with an installed base of 16 companies, we feel the factory cost model can be commercialized in short order."
Dr. Bomber states, "We recognized the need to provide long term support for products developed under NCAICM sponsorship. Clearly, that had to come from a commercial enterprise. We chose Wright Williams & Kelly based on their track record of successful commercialization of operational modeling programs, most notably their work with SEMATECH on Cost of Ownership."
"We are very excited about our agreement with Sandia", states David W. Jimenez, WWK's Vice President & General Manager. "Factory Commander® provides a unique capability in the market and fills a void between our TWO COOL® Cost of Ownership models and our Factory Explorer® discrete event simulator. There is considerable pent-up demand based on market knowledge of other products from SEMATECH that have never been made commercially available."
Factory Commander® performs high level analysis of factory capacity, individualized product flow costs, overall factory costs, and is able to handle such sophisticated manufacturing strategies as multiple subassembly mergers and full rework loops. Independent evaluation has indicated that Factory Commander® is superior to even the most advanced proprietary CRM type models.
